How does nutrition impact egg and sperm health?

The quality of your eggs (and sperm) is crucial for fertility. Nutrition plays a vital role in this aspect. A balanced diet provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that safeguard your eggs and sperm from oxidative stress.  This promotes longevity and viability. Conversely, poor nutrition or a diet high in processed foods may adversely affect quality.

Which foods support fertility?

We wouldn’t begin to think we can cover all the foods in a few paragraphs! However here are a just a few important foods to consider:

Fruits: Berries, berries and more berries for antioxidants! Citrus for Vitamin C, avocados for healthy fats, bananas for Vitamin B6, and pineapple for anti-inflammatory bromelain.

Veggies: Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are folate-rich, broccoli and sweet potatoes pack vitamins, while cauliflower, beans, and lentils are fibre and folate champs.

Whole Grains: Complex carbs for lasting energy, plus vitamins, fibre, and protein.

Lean Proteins: Poultry, fish, and legumes for hormone balance and baby-making health.

Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, and olive oil for omega-3 goodness.

Dairy or Substitutes: Get your calcium for strong bones and baby development.

Folate Heroes: Leafy greens, legumes, and citrus fruits for baby’s growth.

Iron Warriors: Lean meats, poultry, fish, dark leafy veggies, and fortified cereals to keep your energy up.

How can nutrition help prepare my body for egg freezing?

If you haven’t heard yet, your ovarian eggs take three months to mature.  This means that your diet right now has an effect on the eggs you will ovulate in the future. The same is true of sperm health!  We always recommend the expert advice of our nutritionist if you’re in the process of egg freezing or wanting to fall pregnant.  In the meantime, boost your egg-freezing journey with these fun foods:

Leafy Greens, Berries, and Citrus: Pile on the greens, berries, and citrus fruits to keep your eggs happy and protected from stress.

Omega-3 Heroes: Dive into fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts to make your eggs extra awesome.

Lean Protein Power: Chicken, fish, and plant-based goodies give your eggs the building blocks they need.

Iron Boosters: Get your iron fix from lean meats, beans, and fortified cereals to keep your blood pumping during freezing.

Stay Hydrated: Sip on water and munch on hydrating snacks to keep your body in tip-top shape.

What is the role of supplements in preconception?

Supplements may play a valuable role in preconception by bridging nutritional gaps and supporting reproductive health. However it’s important to remember that you can’t out supplement a bad diet! Folic Acid, Omega-3 Fatty Acids,  Iron and Coenzyme Q10 are all important supplements to consider when planning a pregnancy or egg freeze.
